Synchronicity and synchro-destiny | A lecture at Theosophical Society

Exploring life from a new dimension of reality—synchronicity is the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear to be significantly related but may not have a discernible causal connection. In other words, these external events are connected by meaning rather than cause, as they cannot be explained by conventional physics of causality. The term ‘synchronicity’ was coined by the great Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung, based on numerous cases he studied before concluding his theories on the phenomenon of synchronized episodes often characterized by a subjective mental state of being.

However, the significance of synchronicity goes beyond just events representing a psychic state. It is like a sign that appears in our reality, precisely when we are not consciously looking for it, and brings our awareness to the present moment to convey some kind of a message—a heart language through which the deeper subconscious mind communicates with the surface consciousness, the higher self converses with the little self incarnated into a lifetime. It happens to provide us with a context to reflect more deeply, to take the resonance of a particular moment into account so we can create passageways from one level of the mind to another leading to a fuller and more profound communication with the self, deepening our engagement with the events of the day, allowing ‘being’ to come through into the course of ‘doing’. The length of our lifetime on earth presents the opportunity to accomplish our objectives and claim our unique destiny, but in this reality of duality, in this confounding physicality of contrasts, mired in cultural conditioning and limiting belief systems of dysfunctional societies, one may actually forget and lose track of that target. Hence, synchronicities help connect one to the deeper portion of the mind which is aware of what needs to be done and is quite capable of signaling the surface mind through symbolism exclusively catered to each individual. Some people think it is coincidence, as both coincidence and synchronicity are seen as “striking occurrences of two or more events at the same time”, however, there is a huge difference between the two. Like, I was experiencing seemingly random coincidences during my travels across the globe, which turned out to be neither senseless nor simple but life defining in terms of their depth and meaning. You see, coincidence is perceived as chance or luck or mere happenstance where we have no control over the situation, while synchronicity implies the presence of a deeper intelligence at work, as we open ourselves up to cosmic insights and inner guidance. This pure awareness connects us with our true selves beyond all the mental conditioning and societal programming.

The abracadabra way, magic at play

This lecture is grounded upon my own experiences during my escapades around the world recounted in my latest book, Life Is Abracadabra -21 magical stories from my travels to make you look at life with new eyes, published by Hay House, a Penguin Random House publisher. An experiential documentation of how to transcend the ordinary into extraordinary outcomes in alignment with our desires, its central theme is synchronicity. I did not know anything about synchronicities when they appeared in my field of reality. Exactly when those seemingly abstract synchronicities started dotting my path, I can’t even tell, but eventually they got so intense and impelling that I began jotting them down and what followed is the book—synchronicities that materialized impossible dreams, disentangled unworkable problems, got me out of inescapable situations, saved my life several times, and laid out in front of me a magical path to tread, one step at a time. As outer intention made itself manifest, I realized a larger plan unfolding for me, leading me and pleading me to live out my destiny, and all I had to do was take the next step with faith and wonder, plunge into the abyss of mystery and paradox, and allow the guidance within to reveal itself. Because it was the path of the heart that my rational mind could not completely fathom or explain.

When a synchronicity occurs it is a good reminder to keep your attention on what you’re trying to achieve in life even when this is difficult, to remember that you have come here for a purpose in order to accomplish specific things, and that your intention to complete those things can in fact falter, hence a glance at the clock at a precise time like 11:11 or 3:33, so to speak, can indeed be a gentle reminder that no time is as good as the present to fortify that intention and be reassured that you’re on the right path.

Synchro-destiny: Destiny is not the same as fate. While fate seems to be predetermined with not much room for change, destiny on the other hand is the path of the heart carved by desire and will, and aligns with what brings us true joy. The more intense the desire the more groomed is the energy, but even the most indistinct ways of concentrating upon a wish can cause some kind of synchronicity to appear. Now, why would any sensible, sentient life form depart from the sound ground of reason and logic, and plunge into the bottomless chasm of mystery and paradox? Why would anyone deviate from that which can be proven, touched, seen, and instead seek the unseen, the unknown? Because that is where spiritual growth occurs. The yearning for spiritual truth is such that one must leave their comfort zone of rationality and practicality, quit relying wholly on that which can be seen or proven, and instead take the side street, the dark alleys, the shadowy lanes of mystery and infinity.

We learn this universal language of synchronicity by making mistakes, failing, falling, but never giving up, by paying attention and following our hearts. From a computing graduate to a marketing executive to a German interpreter, English teacher, Spanish translator, to now a writer, speaker, performer, mysterious coincidences or “synchronicities” have led me from one place to another—through Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, North & Central America—contriving me to live out my destiny, my true legacy.
