mom told, for a good husband I prayed
and all those strange practices I obeyed
in loud celebration the hails roared
in my ears the priest’s voice echoed
he is the savior, for your sins he laid
receive jesus and you shall be saved
then the sanskrit mantras, i remembered
for hours in temples the pundits uttered
them i followed as i wanted to be good
jesus never appeared in my childhood
neither presents for me did santa hold
an altogether different story i was told
one in which krishna was the lord
and all the miracles he performed
the demons he slayed for all of our sake
never celebrated christmas nor cut cake
rather on diwali numerous candles i lit
singing bhajans at shrines hours did i sit
those rituals didn’t make any more sense
than what your church made me witness
all the globe I trotted for years odd
trying to find this thing called god
christ, allah, rama, i encountered
what is god’s religion, i wondered
because none of them could explain
what i was experiencing, this pain
to tell me of the love of christ, you tried
to see the love in my heart, but you failed
all this god stuff made no sense to me
yet my feelings, i ached for you to see
the only god i ever could comprehend
in my soul, my beliefs it did transcend
so arguing about god, we spent two days
as two estranged hearts, we parted ways
then you went your route; i went mine
pretending that everything was just fine
but love remained in the alley, deserted
unrecognized, unclaimed, uncharted
religion did it once again
made an uncanny bargain
one that we could not see
it separated you and me
